According to news on May 21, AU Optronics and French Micro LED technology company Aledia announced a strategic partnership. The two parties will combine their respective advantages in technology and manufacturing to jointly develop a new generation of Micro LED display technology that combines high brightness, low power consumption and high resolution.
A highlight of this cooperation is that the two parties will deeply integrate Aledia's high-voltage Micro LED technology based on its exclusive 3D nanowire architecture into AUO's display backplane.
The core goal of this project is to accelerate the industrialization of Micro LED displays by combining AUO's extensive experience in display engineering and system integration with Aledia's Micro LED technology designed for large-scale semiconductor manufacturing, thereby meeting the growing global market demand for next-generation display technology.
AUO's deputy general manager of innovative R&D said at the launch ceremony that AUO is actively promoting the development of next-generation display technology based on Micro LED and expects Aledia's unique 8-inch silicon-based 3D nanowire technology to help AUO push Micro LED display capabilities to a new level.
Ness Benamran, Chief Financial Officer of Aledia, pointed out that this cooperation marks the beginning of a close strategic partnership between AUO and Aledia. Although the two parties are currently engaged in the display field, future cooperation will go beyond the display itself and further extend to emerging application fields such as short-distance optical communication in AI data centers and AR glasses.
It is worth noting that in the recently popular optical communications field, AUO and Aledia have already launched a profound industrial layout.
As a major panel manufacturer, AU Optronics relies on its 30 years of glass process experience, combined with its mature Micro LED mass transfer technology, and the integration of group internal resources such as Fucai (light source transmitter) and Dingyuan (light sensing receiver), and has officially entered the AI data center short-distance optical communication market, realizing the cross-border extension of display technology into the optical communication field.
Currently, AUO has carried out system-level introduction tests with international AI and optical communications manufacturers, and it is expected to gradually promote commercialization within 2 to 3 years.
AUO Chairman Peng Shuanglang has previously pointed out that in order to solve the problem of high energy consumption, AI data centers are accelerating the shift to optical communications and adopting co-packaged optics (CPO) technology. Future optical communication modules will inevitably turn to glass processes. At present, AUO has developed a complete Micro LED CPO module technology, which can provide different solutions for short, medium and long transmission distances.
At the same time, Aledia is also actively promoting the diversified applications of Micro LED technology outside of displays. It has launched its exclusive technology brand μLink, which uses Micro LED non-polar and semi-polar crystal plane engineering to achieve technological optimization in three dimensions: bandwidth, drive current and conversion efficiency. It is specially built for high-speed optical interconnection of AI infrastructure and data centers.
Recently, Aledia's senior management has frequently conducted technical docking with core hubs of the global optical communications industry chain, conducted in-depth discussions on process, cost and mass production capabilities, and is committed to introducing light-speed connection technology into the next generation AI computing architecture.
This time, the strong cooperation between Aledia and AUO will not only reshape the Micro LED display landscape, but also accelerate the commercialization of both parties in the AI optical communication track in the future. (Compiled by LEDinside)
