Apple will launch new iPad next year, new display attracts attention

According to multiple media reports, in order to boost declining iPad sales, Apple plans to conduct a major update to the iPad product line in early 2024 and will launch new iPad Air and iPad Pro. Apple plans to use OLED displays on the new iPad Pro. Previously, Apple has used OLED technology on iPhone and Apple Watch. This is the first time that OLED technology has been used in the iPad Pro product line.

Compared with traditional LED or Mini LED, OLED display has a more vivid and higher contrast display effect, and has become the main force of high-end products in the small and medium-sized screen market. For example, the Huawei Mate60, which is hot on the market and hard to find, uses a flexible OLED display screen. It was previously reported that Apple’s first-generation MR headset Vision Pro will use a silicon-based OLED display.

The market is optimistic about the development prospects of OLED. According to Omdia data, mobile phone OLED shipments will account for 75% of the total OLED market shipments in 2022, and OLED is gradually penetrating into automotive, flat-panel display and other markets.

Reporters from Shanghai Securities News noticed that more and more smart hardware are beginning to adopt new display technologies such as OLED, Micro OLED, and Mini LED. According to market rumors, meta Quest3 will use a Micro OLED display solution. As a transitional technology for Micro OLED, the application of Mini LED has exploded on the TV side.

JD TV Video’s “Double 11” full-cycle battle report and Tmall’s “Double 11” TV industry sales list show that TCL’s 98-inch, 75-inch and other models of Mini LED TVs are on the best-selling list. In October this year, Xiaomi launched a new S Pro series Mini LED TV, providing 65There are two versions: 1-inch and 75-inch. The initial price starts from 4,299 yuan, and they are already sold out during the pre-sale stage on Xiaomi Mall.

Regarding the growth trend of Mini LED, a person from a display and terminal manufacturer introduced in an interview that Mini Driven by the substantial growth in sales of high-end products such as LED TVs, TV sales achieved a slight increase during this year's "Double 11" period despite the overall decline in sales. In the future, with the efforts of Samsung, LG and domestic terminal manufacturers such as TCL and Xiaomi, the Mini LED market size is expected to maintain continued growth momentum. In addition to TVs, the demand for Mini LED in the display and automotive markets is also continuing to grow.

The above-mentioned people further introduced the reasons behind the explosion of the Mini LED market: first, in terms of performance, Mini LED combines the advantages of LCD and OLED, has better color saturation than traditional LCD, has a longer lifespan than OLED (no screen burn-in problem), and is lower cost; second, Mini LED itself continues to reduce costs, and there is room for cost reduction in the long term.

China Merchants Securities believes that the industry is expected to adopt Mini The cost of core components and links such as LED chips, PCB substrates, and driver ICs is expected to be reduced by 30% annually in the next three years, helping to increase the global Mini LED TV sales penetration rate from 3% in 2023 to 15% in 2026, and global shipments will increase from about 6 million units to 30 million units.above.

As more and more terminals adopt new display technologies, a fund researcher said in an interview that in the future, multiple new display technologies will coexist. Currently, OLED accounts for more than 70% of mobile phone shipments, and is accelerating its penetration into the medium and large size market. In the short to medium term, as a transitional product for Micro OLED, Mini LED will become the standard in the large-size market due to its better display performance and cost performance.

Being optimistic about the development trend of new display technology, major screen display manufacturers have begun to increase their investment.

BOE announced on November 29 that as AMOLED display products are widely used in mobile phones, wearables and other fields, and continue to penetrate into the small and medium-sized display fields, AMOLED products will gradually become a mainstream trend. In order to meet market demand, the company plans to invest and build BOE's 8.6th generation AMOLED production line project in Chengdu High-tech West District with its partners, with a total investment of 63 billion yuan.

In the middle reaches of the industry chain, aiming at the TV side, which is currently the most important application market for Mini LED, many upstream chip module manufacturers such as Xinruida, Ruifeng Optoelectronics, and Jufei Optoelectronics are already vigorously cooperating with terminal manufacturers to launch products.

Xinruida said that the company's Mini LED displays include a variety of mid- to high-end and low-end products. Currently, the main customers are Hisense and Skyworth. Ruifeng Optoelectronics said that in the field of Mini LED backlight in the first half of the year, the demand for TV backlights and the verification demand for new models showed an increasing trend. The company continues to be optimistic about the future explosion of Mini LED demand. Jufei Optoelectronics revealed that the main customers of the company's Mini LED backlight products are currently TV head manufacturers. With the rapid development of the application of Mini LED backlight technology, most of the terminal products with large domestic shipments have adopted the company's Mini LED solution.
