Black technology: OLED screens will be integrated with clothes in the future

Beijing time on November 29th, according to foreign media reports, Korean researchers have developed the first truly wearable OLED display. Business Korea published an article stating that two research teams from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and Kolon Glotech collaborated to develop an OLED display based on textiles. The OLED display they developed is more flexible than competing technologies.

There have also been research teams developing flexible, foldable and wearable OLED displays before. OLED is a self-luminous display technology that can produce ultra-thin and flexible displays based on plastic plates. Robustness is not the advantage of OLED display technology, it is easily damaged.

Simply blending a display with textiles is quite difficult. Generally, the surface of textiles is rough and the thermal expansion and contraction are serious. The researchers developed new textiles that were similar to glass panels but retained the flexible properties of the textiles. OLED displays were then mounted on the glass-like textiles.

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Kolon Glotech have high hopes for textile-based displays. Choi Kyung-chul, a professor at the Korea Academy of Science and Technology, said, "Textile OLED displays are more flexible and more reliable than plastic-based displays, and will promote the development of comfortable wearable displays."

Textile OLED displays have a life cycle of more than 1,000 hours and a "standby time" of more than 3,500 hours. Of course, its longevity won't be comparable to current displays, but it's a big step forward in the development of wearable displays. Further research will further refine this technology, and perhaps one day we will be able to actually wear displays that are integrated with our clothes.
