1. Small-pitch LED displays are currently a hot spot in the LED display market. Compared with traditional DLP, LCD, projector and other display devices, what do you think are their respective advantages and disadvantages? Will the application of indoor small spacing have a fatal impact on traditional DLP, LCD, projector and other industries? At present, small-pitch companies in the industry have stated that LED small-pitch LEDs will replace traditional products. Do you think they can replace them?
Li Xiangdong, Vice President of Leyard Optoelectronics:
As far as the current situation is concerned, traditional display devices have a wide range of applications, and their biggest advantage is that they are cost-effective. The disadvantage is that there are gaps, but LED small-pitch displays can achieve seamless splicing. If we talk about the replacement of traditional products, I personally think that large sizes can be replaced, but small sizes cannot. Products above 110 inches can be replaced. If the size goes down, complete replacement cannot be achieved. This problem is unrealistic, and naturally there is no such pursuit, because there are technical bottlenecks in this aspect. Take the LCD panel as an example. When it goes up to 110 inches, the price of small spacing is only one-third of it. As for the particularity of small spacing itself, it is originally spliced from a single module. As the size goes up, the cost will not increase geometrically. For LCD panels, its cutting yield is much lower. This gap is impossible to catch up. Therefore, I think this is a market that complements each other. There is no one who can replace the other. Each has its own way of living and can coexist.
Leiyu, Director of Easystar Optoelectronics Marketing Department:
Judging from the current market situation, small-pitch LED displays do partially replace traditional LCD, DLP, etc. This is an undeniable status quo. The market share of small-pitch displays is growing. Many projects that previously used DLP and LCD now use small-pitch LED displays. But from the perspective of technology and application scenarios, I believe that small-pitch displays will only partially replace traditional devices, and will never be all of them. First of all, small-pitch LED displays overcome the area limitations of traditional display equipment, so projects that require area will undoubtedly be replaced by small-pitch displays. For example, the CNPC Monitoring Center project, with an area of more than 300 square meters, uses small-pitch LED displays from Shenzhen Easystar Electronics. Will projects that have no difficulty in display area be replaced by small-pitch LEDs? Let's analyze it. Excluding the advantage of area, small-pitch displays have several advantages, overcoming the advantages of traditional displays such as patchwork, color difference, dark edges, and fusion bands. But what are the shortcomings of LED small spacing compared to traditional display devices? First of all, in terms of pixels, the pixels of LED display are determined by the physical pixels of the display screen and cannot be changed; while the pixels of traditional display are adjustable, all video sources with accurate pixel requirements,For example, military GPS, etc., traditional display devices are obviously suitable. Technically speaking, small-pitch LEDs will definitely replace most traditional display devices, but not all.
Chen Zebo, General Manager of Marui Optoelectronics:
The advantages of LED display are 1. Seamless splicing; 2. High-definition display; 3. High contrast ratio 3000:1; 4. High grayscale: 16bit; 5. Silent design (no fan); 6. Rich colors; 7. The box weight is generally light (5-5.6 kg); 8. The horizontal viewing angle can reach 160 degrees.
The disadvantage is that the individual cost of LED displays is still relatively high. For example, the market price of P1.5 small-pitch screens is generally about 100,000 yuan per square meter, and P1.9 is about 80,000 yuan. However, with the improvement of production technology and the decline in raw material prices, the cost-effectiveness advantage of small-pitch screens will become more and more obvious in the future.
Disadvantages of DLP: 1) After a certain period of use, there will be obvious color and brightness differences between screens, commonly known as "patching", which seriously affects the display effect; 2) The viewing angle is small (horizontal 120°/vertical 80°), and there is an obvious "column brightness decrease" phenomenon when viewed from the side; 3) The front brightness is low (200--400 cd/m²), and it is greatly affected by ambient light. Glass screens are also prone to obvious reflective phenomena; 4) The unit consistency is poor and is particularly unsuitable for monitoring. The center displays pure background color files such as GPS maps and production flow charts. Moreover, the seams are easily confused with the table dividers, causing misreading and misjudgment of the content.
Disadvantages of LCD: 1) At present, there are obvious and wide seams (LCD ≥ 5.3mm); 2) When used to monitor and command large-scale important meetings or video conferences, characters will be clearly separated by the seams, seriously affecting the display effect and character image; 3) After a certain period of use Obvious dark edges and corners will appear, and color and brightness differences will appear between screens, and cannot be adjusted and restored; 4) When displaying GPS signals of traffic vehicles, GPS signals of factory and mine production personnel, etc. with complex connecting lines or maps, the patchwork will seriously affect the correct judgment of the dispatcher.
Disadvantages of the projector: 1) After long-term use, the brightness and color of the projector are inconsistent, causing a relatively obvious fusion zone, which seriously affects the display effect; 2) The ambient lighting requirements are high, and the ambient light directly shining on the screen seriously affects the display effect; 3) The fusion zone "eats" the pixels in the overlapping parts, and the entire screen resolution cannot achieve standard resolution. (The resolution of the entire screen after splicing is not an integer multiple of 1920, and multiple 1920 signals cannot be displayed point-to-point); 4) Rear-projection fusion splicing requires a larger darkroom space (generally requiring a depth greater than 1.5M-2M). Front-projection fusion splicing requires no people to move in front of the screen to prevent the projection light from being blocked.
Personally, I believe that in the future, as the price of indoor small-pitch products decreases and the technology becomes more mature, it will have a greater impact on the DLP, LCD and projection industries, especially the DLP industry, because DLP products have been promoted and applied in the market for decades, and have reached the bottleneck stage in terms of technological development, manufacturing costs and sales prices. As many units such as state-owned enterprises and agencies have more complex and higher requirements for indoor splicing products, the demand for DLP products will become increasingly narrow.
Shenzhen Ruituo Display Technology Co., Ltd. He Songlin:
When DLP reaches 80 sizes or more, there will be gaps. But when it comes to saying that small spacing can completely replace traditional ones, I don’t think it can be said completely. Currently, in the mid-to-high-end display market, there are still many small spacings because the color performance of small spacing is better than that of DLP. Each display unit of DLP is different. When small spacing is spliced together, the consistency of the entire screen will be better than that of DLP. I think there is a huge market for large screens, but for real LED TVs, few people use them because they are very expensive for the civilian market. If you go to JD.com or Suning to buy an LED backlit TV, the after-sales service is guaranteed, it is easy to install, and when you watch it at home, its display effect is not much different from a real self-illuminating LED TV. Moreover, LED TVs are very harmful to glasses because of their self-illumination for a long time. LED backlight TVs are backlit and can also protect glasses to a certain extent. But when it comes to the commercial field, we have to look at the effect and color realism, because it is to attract attention, and I am very optimistic about the small-pitch commercial market.
Dai Zhiming, Product Director of Lamp Technology:
Technically speaking, replacing traditional display devices is a major trend and is replaceable. From the origin, DLP belongs to the second generation of display light sources, plasma is the third generation, and LED and even OLED are the fourth generation. LED is an active light source, so it is a process of active instead of passive. Although plasma is also an active light source, it uses gas as the light source, which contains pollution and harmful substances, and is easy to be burned. However, there is still a long way to go in this replacement process. The current survival situation of LED companies is not very good, and the profit margin is not very high. In addition, the technical reserves of small spacing itself, the restrictions on capital flow, and the yield rate have all affected the development of small spacing. For now, there are no conditions for replacement. After so many years of development, traditional display equipment has its own fixed customer base and a certain market foundation. It is unrealistic for these established companies to easily withdraw from the market.
Cheng Deshi, General Manager of Shanghai Sansi:
High-density small-pitch LED display is not a revolution, but a product of technological development. It is a "noun" and a "concept" of listed companies. From the perspective of market application, it has become an irreversible trend for "small-pitch LED displays" to gradually replace "DLP projection walls" and enter monitoring and command centers; it is also reasonable to replace a small number of "single projections" to find a place in conference rooms; although "LED-TV" and "LCD-TV" are brothers, they have to settle accounts clearly. At this stage, 2 square meters is a suitable "38th line".
Yang Sihua, deputy general manager of Alto Electronics:
First of all, LED display screens are active light-emitting display devices, which are completely different from traditional LCD and DLP display methods. When the display size is small, LCD will be slightly better in terms of price and viewing comfort. However, when used for larger-size displays, the advantages of LED displays are very obvious, mainly in terms of seamless splicing, low power consumption, richer colors, and relatively lower prices. The small-pitch LED display further improves the display resolution, and the display effect is significantly better than traditional display devices. At present, it is gradually replacing DLP display equipment with its superior performance and continuously penetrating into this market. This penetration process will also take some time. As for small and medium-sized LCDs, they will still occupy a certain share in the indoor display market, especially in the field of consumer TV, and should still dominate the market.
