Dominating the next-generation display world, OLED takes the throne at SID2016

The SID (Society for Information) that just ended in the United States last week Display (Information Display Association Annual Meeting) 2016, leading brands in the global display industry such as Samsung Display, LG Display, BOE, JDI, etc., all showed their new display products. In the battle between these companies, the next generation display technology seems to be OLED. Due to its wide color gamut, fast response, low power consumption, bendability and other significant advantages, OLED will completely replace the existing LCD technology in the future, and various upstream panel brands are also focusing on accelerating OLED manufacturing upgrades.

At the Display Week exhibition of SID 2016, almost all exhibitors displayed cutting-edge solutions based on OLED panel technology. Although the product sizes are mostly small and medium-sized products below 10 inches, due to the rapid rise of smartphones, tablets, wearable products, vehicle-mounted displays, VR/AR and other industries, the focus of competition in the panel industry will be in the small and medium-sized category for a long time. The new results exposed at the exhibition are also the most eye-catching OLED display products used in smart terminals.

The 5.7-inch OLED screen exhibited by Samsung has a resolution of 1920×1080 and a pixel density (PPI) of 386. The most surprising thing is that this screen can be rolled into a metal pillar like a scroll. The screen is 0.3mm thick, weighs only 5 grams, and has a curvature of 10R. However, the on-site display product does not have a touch layer installed. Adding a touch layer will have a certain impact on the thickness and curvature. Another 5.7-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2560×1440 was also displayed on site. The screen is 0.3 mm thick and has a pixel density (PPI) of 551.

LG displayed a wide variety of OLED products, ranging from 12.3-inch plastic OLED curved displays to 77-inch UHD OLED TV products. LG showed no less enthusiasm for OLED than Samsung. Especially in the future automotive display market, which LG attaches great importance to, automotive displays, dashboards, and touch solutions based on OLED technology are all eye-catching.

In addition to the two traditional Korean manufacturers, representatives of domestic panel companies such as BOE and Shentianma also showed up at SID with their latest research and development products. In 2016, although BOE was well recognized by the industry for its world's first 82-inch 10K resolution (10240×4320) curved display product and 98-inch 8K resolution (7680×4320) display product, facing the future OLED market, BOE also developed solutions and displayed two 4.35-inch OLED products: flexible armbands and foldable displays.

For Chinese panel manufacturers represented by BOE, like their Japanese and Korean competitors, they are also intensively deploying the OLED market. Small and medium-sized OLED panels are an important development direction for BOE in this field. The 6th generation AMOLED production line currently under construction by BOE in Chengdu is oriented to flexible technology.

According to the evaluation of foreign media, several Chinese panel companies and the entire ecological chain are developing very rapidly. However, in the field of cutting-edge technology, there is still a big gap with Japanese and Korean manufacturers. As the world's leading producer and consumer of display products, China has long relied on imports of LCD panel products. In recent years, domestic panel companies supported by local governments have concentrated on building advanced LCD panel production lines, which has led to the risk of overcapacity. On the other hand, Samsung, LG and other companies have quickly switched to OL With ED technology, existing outdated LCD panel production lines are frequently shut down, and the idea of maintaining competitive advantage through technological iteration is obvious. Although domestic companies have responded quickly and have actively participated in OLED technology and product research and development, whether they can seize the OLED opportunity in the next-generation display market is definitely not something that can be achieved by simply spending a lot of money.

Through this SID 2016 Display Week exhibition event, the trend of OLED technology becoming the next generation of mainstream display technology has been very obvious. With the upcoming product launches of Samsung, Apple and other products in the second half of the year, the advantages of OLED technology will quickly brainwash consumers around the world. The first boom period of the OLED market will be detonated. Let us prepare together to welcome the new technology to take the throne.
