Foreign media: Apple will use Micro LED screens on iPhones in the future

According to foreign media reports, Apple will use Micro LED screens on iPhones in the future, thus getting rid of its dependence on Samsung OLED screens. In order to meet Apple's demand, Hon Hai, a major electronics foundry in Taiwan, is currently expanding its investment in Micro LED screens to obtain future orders from Apple. In addition, relevant screen industry chains in Taiwan are pushing for screens with this technology to break Samsung's monopoly on OLED screens and open up a new blue ocean for Taiwan's panel industry.

Reports pointed out that as a challenger to OLED screens, Micro LED screens have more advantages than OLED screens. First of all, the lifespan is much longer than that of OLED screens. Secondly, there is no need for backlight when displaying, and the screen itself can emit light, which means that Micro LED screens can provide better display effects and high contrast.

However, since Micro LED technology will still be commercialized for some time, early manufacturers plan to promote Mini LED screens first, and then promote Micro LED screens when the technology is fully mature. It is understood that Huawei and Xiaomi may launch mobile phones equipped with Mini LED screens in the second half of 2019. In addition, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said that Apple will launch Mini LED 31.6-inch independent displays, 10- to 12-inch iPads, and 15- to 17-inch MacBooks between the second and third quarters of 2019, between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021, and between the first and second quarters of 2021.

The report further stated that Mini LED can be regarded as a transitional product before Micro LED technology matures. Apple is very optimistic about the prospects of this type of screen, and it has been previously reported that Apple intends to cooperate with the supply chain in Taiwan, with the goal of focusing on Micro LED technology products.

In addition, in addition to the screen technology itself, Apple is optimistic about Micro LED technology and hopes to get rid of its dependence on Samsung for OLED screens. Currently from the iPhone Because other important components of the iPhone are supplied by 2 to 3 manufacturers at the same time, but only in the OLED screen, Apple has no other choice.

Since Samsung occupies a monopoly in the OLED market, Apple does not have much dominance in purchasing OLED screens, so it cannot negotiate too much with Samsung. This has resulted in OLED screens currently being the most expensive component on the iPhone, with prices reaching more than $110. Although Apple has supported manufacturers such as LG and JDI, and plans to bring in BOE, it is still not a complete solution. With the current price being the key to turning defeat into victory for Apple’s iPhone, Apple hopes to have more dominance in order to gain the largest niche.
