IHS predicts in its latest report that OLED TV shipments for 2016 will be only 830,000 units, a significant decrease of nearly 70% compared to the estimated value half a year ago. Since LG has a 96% share of the OLED TV market, its estimated shipments have also been significantly reduced, which may have a great market impact.
LG and Samsung chose to enter the OLED panel market almost at the same time in early 2013, but their development ideas were completely different. They chose one large and one small respectively. The former has been immersed in the production of OLED panels suitable for large-size devices such as TVs, and missed the excellent opportunity to compete with Samsung for the small-size OLED panel market.
The iPhone 7s/8, which will be launched in 2017, has basically been confirmed to use OLED panels. Samsung will undoubtedly become the first supplier (it is reported that Samsung will provide 100 million OLED panels to Apple next year), and LG has also recently invested heavily in preparing to compete with Japan Display for the second supplier qualification.
