Hong Kong professor develops LED template projection, LED plus helmet becomes "back eye"

Scientists look to the future and lead human technological progress. LED technology is the proud work of Liu Jimei, Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In recent years, she has successfully developed an LED template projection that can play monochrome "micro-movies" on a small area of 10mm*15mm. This technology can be adjusted in size and use according to needs, and is expected to be used in the development of smart glasses, car front glass displays and other products.

The template size is only 15mm for "high definition"

LED is a semiconductor electronic component that can be made into different light-emitting products and has the advantages of high brightness and power saving. As LED technology becomes more mature, its development potential is growing. Liu Jimei, who has been engaged in LED research for many years, has successfully controlled the size of the LED template and LED light-emitting display technology, and can project movies on a single LED template with an area of less than 10mm*15mm, with a resolution of up to 1700PPI.

Today's electronic products are changing with each passing day. In the past, display screens mainly used liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. However, large mercury lamps were used as backlights for projection, which was not only expensive, but also consumed high power and had a lifespan of only more than 1,000 hours. However, LEDs can "make their own" light sources and do not generate additional heat, which can greatly reduce power consumption. The lifespan can also be as long as tens of thousands of hours, and the energy-saving effect has been significantly improved. However, the technology can currently only produce three monochromatic projections: red, blue and green. Liu Jimei revealed that color projection is one of her students’ research directions.

"Wearing a helmet does not require a rear mirror"

Liu Jimei said that the relevant display technology can be arbitrarily adjusted in size and has a wide range of applications. Different products can be produced according to the needs of enterprises and markets, such as with "Goog Smart glasses such as "le Glass" are "mounted on the glasses for display, and then connected to the camera. You seem to have an extra eye on the back, and you don't need to install a rear mirror when wearing a helmet." For example, they can be installed on the front glass of a car to display information such as speed and map.

In addition, "smart three-in-one traffic lights" are feasible products. She said: "I looked at the traffic lights and thought, why do we need three lights? Can't three colors be turned on in turn?" Or "A light circle projects different colors. In addition to colors, it can also project words. Red equals Stop, and color-blind people can also see it. It can be done with a single LED and a magnifying glass."
