Korean media: Samsung’s first 6.47-inch flagship phone will be released next year

On May 20, according to Korean media ETnews, Samsung Electronics plans to release the "Galaxy S27 Pro" (tentative name) in the first half of next year. This model will be equipped with a 6.47-inch OLED display. This will be the first time that Samsung’s flagship smartphone adopts this screen size, which has attracted widespread attention in the market.

A person familiar with the matter revealed: "Next year's Galaxy S27 series will launch four models, one of which will use a 6.47-inch screen size that Samsung Electronics has never tried."

Since the 2020 Galaxy S20 series, Samsung has followed the strategy of three flagships in parallel: the standard version, the Plus version and the Ultra version. Samsung plans to expand its product line to four models by adding a new model starting in 2027. This model is expected to be a "Pro" version, which will feature the removal of the stylus input feature found on the top-tier Ultra model, but will share most of the specs with the Ultra model.

Currently, the Galaxy S26 series sold by Samsung include: standard version 6.27 inches, Plus version 6.66 inches, Ultra version 6.89 inches. The Galaxy S25 Edge, which was released last year and features an "ultra-thin" design, is equipped with a 6.56-inch screen.

It is reported that Samsung developed Edge to replace the existing Plus model and become the first ultra-thin smartphone in the S26 series. However, due to lackluster market response, Samsung canceled the Edge release plan and redeveloped and launched the Plus model.

According to analysis, Samsung Electronics plans to launch a new flagship product in the S27 series that is different from existing models, first reflected in the screen size, in order to strengthen its product line. It is speculated that Samsung intends to seize the market with a differentiated strategy in order to broaden consumers' choices.

In addition, some people believe that this move is intended to benchmark Apple's four-model product system. Apple's iPhone product line is divided into standard models (standard version and Air) and high-end models (Pro and Pro Max). The iPhone 17 series released last year increased the screen size of the standard version by about 0.2 inches, making the screen sizes: 6.27 inches for the standard version, 6.55 inches for the Air, 6.27 inches for the Pro, and 6.86 inches for the Pro Max.

Samsung Electronics has always adopted the model of releasing the Galaxy S series at the beginning of the year and folding screen phones such as Fold and Flip in the second half of the year. Although performance continues to improve, there are minimal changes in design such as screen size, making it difficult for consumers to perceive the difference.

It is worth noting that it remains to be seen whether the launch of models that are differentiated from the past can further boost the demand for Samsung smartphones. (Translated from ETnews)
