Patent war unexpectedly resumes, Acer is accused of infringement by Cree in the US

Another major international LED manufacturer has filed a lawsuit against Taiwan. Cree, an American LED manufacturer, sued Acer for infringement of six patents in the United States. Unlisted company Jintai is also on the list. It is the second major international manufacturer to sue a Taiwanese manufacturer after Nichia took a bite out of Everlight. In this regard, Hongqi expressed "surprise and regret" on the 17th, but emphasized that the company's revenue in the US market does not account for a high proportion, the impact is limited, and it will not affect the rights and interests of shareholders and customers.

Cree has just announced its investment in Longda, but it has filed an infringement lawsuit against Hongqi. Cree sued Hongqi in the District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin on September 15, US time, for infringing on six patents, which are understood to be white light LED patents. Hongqi said that he has not yet received a formal complaint from the court, but has obtained relevant information through channels.
Hongqi said that Cree is Hongqi's supplier and has purchased hundreds of millions of Taiwan dollars in products from it in recent years. Since 2013, Hongqi has actively proposed further business cooperation plans to help Cree improve its product competitiveness and seek a win-win situation. Hongqi is surprised and regretful that Cree willfully launch a patent war against customers and well-intentioned partners.

Hongqi emphasized that the company’s product sales areas are mainly in Asia, the number of products involved in the infringement lawsuit is small, and the U.S. market does not account for a high proportion of revenue, which will not have a significant impact on the company’s business and finances.

Hongqi has developed many surface-adhesive LEDs with functions such as small size, power saving, long service life and pressure resistance in SMD LED packaging in recent years. This technology has obtained more than 200 patents around the world, nearly 100 of which are U.S. patents.

This year the LED lighting market has taken off. North America, Europe, Japan, and mainland China are the top four lighting markets in the world. In order to consolidate their market share, leading manufacturers in various places have launched patent wars in various places. Before Cree sued Hongqi and Jintai, Nichia held fast to Everlight, and both parties are still in litigation proceedings.
