Samsung Electronics squeezes into top three LED packaging companies

Samsung Electronics has entered the top three in the global LED packaging market for the first time. At the same time, it can also be seen that in addition to the memory market that Samsung has dominated for a long time, Samsung is also actively cultivating product competitiveness in non-memory fields.

Korean media Money Today quoted market research agency IHS data and pointed out that Samsung captured 6.1% of the market share in the LED packaging market in the first quarter of 2016 with revenue of US$241 million. Ranked third behind LED industry leader Nichia (14.1%) and second brother Osram (8.1%).

In the past period, the global LED market has been dominated by Nichia, Osram and Philips’ affiliate Lumileds. Tyrant. In 2015, Samsung ranked behind Nichia (US$2.284 billion), Osram (US$1.270 billion) and Lumileds (US$1.147 billion) with revenue of US$954 million. But just in season 1, Samsung defeated Lumileds and became the third brother.

It is reported that Samsung plans to develop more differentiated products to gain dominance in the LED market. Recently, a new CSP LED product Fx-CSP (Flexible Chip Scale Package) has been launched. This product uses resin as the substrate material and can be used in everything from general car side lights to high-brightness headlights, as long as it is used in car lights.

Compared with the past use of ceramic material substrates, Samsung's new products have better heat dissipation, so the stability and light efficiency are also higher. In addition, through chip and packaging technology and flexible circuit board technology, different arrangements can be adapted to should be adapted to different lighting configurations. Samsung pointed out that this product has already obtained orders from global automotive parts manufacturers for small and medium-sized automotive headlight projects.

On the other hand, Samsung obtained UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification in May. UL is an independent product safety certification agency established in 1894 with its head office in Illinois, USA. UL's main business is product safety, and it has also established standards and testing procedures for many products, raw materials, parts, tools and equipment. When exporting to the United States, there are many cases where UL certification is required for production, sales and other logistics channels.

Analysts believe that the LED market will continue to maintain stable growth. IHS pointed out that taking the representative GaN LED as an example, its market size will expand from US$14.4 billion in 2016 to US$17 billion in 2021. The memory market centered on DRAM is currently in negative territory. Growing worries.

From this aspect, the non-memory (system LSI) market is in relatively good shape. Therefore, although Samsung has nearly 75% market share in the memory market, it is still actively cultivating non-memory businesses.

At present, Samsung has achieved the first position in non-memory products with display driver chips (DDI) and IC chips mounted on credit cards. For APs that play the leading role in smartphones, Qualcomm currently ranks first in the market, while Samsung ranks fifth. In the image sensor (CIS) market where Sony occupies half of the market, Samsung has taken the title of second brother.

Samsung is actively cultivating the system LSI department based on its technological capabilities in cutting-edge micro-processing. According to IHS data, Samsung’s fast-growing foundry sector It is rising rapidly. Its revenue in 2014 was only US$604 million, which increased four times in just one year, and its revenue in 2015 reached US$2.529 billion.

Although Samsung's current foundry performance is still only one-tenth of the level of the world's leading TSMC, Samsung plans to use exclusive technology as a weapon to expand its performance starting in 2016. The South Korean industry believes that Samsung relies on the 14-nanometer first-generation FinFET process to help its performance grow rapidly. Starting from 2016, Samsung will begin to adopt a second-generation process that reduces energy consumption and improves performance.
