Samsung Onyx LED cinema screen enters European market, cooperates with Pixar to promote DCI HDR improvement

Recently, at the 2025CineEurope exhibition in Barcelona, Samsung Electronics announced that its onyx LED movie screen has officially landed in the European market, bringing a more superior movie-watching experience to European audiences. This move is another milestone in Samsung’s continued efforts in the field of movie displays. Looking back on its development history, it is not difficult to find Samsung’s continuous breakthroughs and innovations in LED movie screen technology.


As early as June 2017, Samsung unveiled the mystery of the Samsung onyx LED movie screen at the Lotte Cinema World Tower in South Korea, and has since started the road to promote this product around the world. Thailand becomes the first overseas country to install this LED movie screenHome, soon after, onyx LED movie screens successively took root in cinemas in India, China, Malaysia, the United States, and some European countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France and Spain. As of March 2019, Samsung onyx LED cinema screens have been installed and put into use in 32 theaters in 16 countries around the world.

As a major film country, China plays an important role in the promotion of Samsung onyx LED movie screens. In 2018, Samsung began to vigorously promote small-pitch LED movie screen products to China - onyx cinema LED, as of that year, had been installed and applied on more than a dozen movie screens in China. In September of the same year, Shanghai AR.CH Wanda Cinema has built the world's first onyx cinema. The cinema is equipped with six Samsung onyx screening rooms and uses the latest LED picture technology to bring unprecedented high-quality audio-visual enjoyment to the audience. In December, the world's largest Samsung onyx LED cinema screen was installed in Chinese cinemas, with a width of more than 14 meters, surpassing the 10.3-meter product previously launched. The Samsung onyx LED cinema equipped with DTS: Since then, many onyx cinemas have been opened in Shanghai, Beijing and other places. The 14-meter-wide Samsung onyx cinema at the UME Cinema Shanghai Xintiandi store does not require traditional projection technology and has a resolution of 4K. It can be watched in a non-dark environment, creating an immersive feeling for the audience. The upgraded cinema is also equipped with high-end facilities to further enhance the viewing experience.

From the launch of the initial product, to the attention it received at multiple international exhibitions, to the widespread installation in theaters around the world, Samsung LED movie screens have won recognition from the industry and consumers with their continuously upgraded technology and performance. Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display (VD) Business, said that the launch of the onyx series reflects the company’s continued pursuit of high-end movie experience. By partnering with well-known theater chain brands such as Pathé Cinémas and creative animation companies such as Pixar, Samsung aims to provide audiences with a more immersive and shocking visual feast.

In April this year, Samsung released the latest onyx product series LED display. Designed specifically for high-end cinemas, this series supports frame rates up to 120Hz and 4K resolution, providing excellent HDR visual effects with a peak brightness of 300nits, high contrast and color accuracy, bringing lifelike images to the audience.

To meet the needs of different cinemas, onyx LED cinema screens are available in four standard sizes: 5 meters (16 feet) for small cinemas, pixel pitch 1.25 mm; 10 meters (33ft) is the industry standard size with a pixel pitch of 2.5mm; 14m (46ft) is suitable for medium-sized auditoriums with a pixel pitch of 3.3mm; 20m (66ft) is suitable for large-scale auditoriums with a pixel pitch of 5.0mm.

Samsung's long-term cooperation with Pixar Animation Studios is also driving the improvement of HDR movie content standards. Pixar's latest animated film "Elio" will be presented in 4K cinematic HDR format, perfectly compatible with Samsung onyx LED cinema screens. Pixar also plans to install the latest onyx LED cinema screens at its campus in California, USA, for HDR color and brightness evaluation, content quality testing, and demonstration screenings for filmmakers to further optimize onyx’s compatibility with high-quality HDR film productions.

Pixar says its animated films are intended to be experienced in HDR on theatrical HDR displays such as onyx. There are also plans to install new onyx LED displays at its campus in Emeryville, California. Pixar's films make extensive use of color and light, making them particularly suitable forHDR. The studio has long released its movies in HDR for home viewing. Only about 100 cinemas around the world are currently equipped to screen DCI HDR movies.

With the launch of onyx LED movie screens in the European market, Samsung Electronics is expected to reshape the movie-watching experience in European theaters and push the movie industry towards a higher-quality visual experience. In the future, Samsung will continue its innovative development trajectory and continue to bring more surprises to the global film market.
