Wacker Chemical’s silicone products for LEDs
Silicone products have become ideal materials for LED lighting due to their unique overall properties - excellent thermal stability, good light resistance and high transparency. Based on the development trend of lighting technology, Wacker Chemical Co., Ltd. has recently successfully developed a variety of silicone products for LEDs, which are either used as packaging materials to protect components or used to make optical lenses directly on LED chips.

Advantages of silicone materials
Compared with traditional organic materials, Dow Corning's silicone resin is used in the optical system of LED lamps. At the same temperature of 200 degrees Celsius, after aging for 24 hours, only the silicone resin remains unchanged. It can be seen that the high thermal stability of this product provides great help for LED light decay.
Silicone material has obvious advantages. It is easier to shape than glass or plastic, so it can make LEDs have both mechanical and optical properties, thereby simplifying the assembly process. In addition, silicone can be processed at lower temperatures, thus saving energy consumption during LED production. Silicone also has excellent thermal properties and optical stability, as well as excellent UV resistance, chemical resistance and impact resistance, ensuring that the LED light source has a more stable, reliable and high-quality light output throughout the entire life cycle of the lamp.
Phenyl silicone LED packaging characteristics
From the above data, it can be concluded that the refractive index difference between LED potting materials made of phenyl silicone and methyl silicone potting materials is only a small 0.12, and the light output between the two is about 7% higher than that of methyl silicone. Therefore, phenyl silicone potting materials provide a more cost-competitive advantage and can significantly improve the light output and luminous efficiency of LEDs.
Silicone application and secondary optical design
Dow Corning moldable silicone is ideal for LED secondary optical products such as lamp tubes, conduit plates that disperse, gather and distribute light. In addition, this material with high temperature resistance and good photothermal stability can be used near and compatible with high-brightness LED dies, and this design solution can provide lower thermal resistance, excellent pressure resistance and stable, reliable and high-quality thermal management throughout the entire life cycle of LED lamps or lighting.
