Soon Chai, director of Thailand's National Power Supply Bureau, said at a press conference for the upcoming "Thailand LED Expo 2014" that the national electricity consumption from January to April this year showed a negative growth of 1% compared with the same period last year, which will be about 500 million kilowatt-hours less than the 50 billion kilowatt-hours in the same period last year. Consistent with the slowdown in the national economy plagued by political issues, it is predicted that if the political issues are resolved in the near future and economic stimulus policies and measures are promoted after a new government is formed, domestic electricity consumption may grow by 2% this year.
Shunchai said that the national economic growth was negative in the first quarter of this year, and the domestic electricity consumption also showed the same trend. It is hoped that the political situation will be alleviated and resolved during the rest of this year, and the economic development will be restored. At the same time, the Power Supply Bureau strives to promote the widespread use of energy-saving LED lamps among the public to improve electricity efficiency and achieve the effect of saving electricity. The use of LED lamps can increase electricity efficiency by 50-70%. After communicating with the National Agency for Alternative Energy and Energy Conservation, it is planned to use the Energy Conservation Promotion Fund to stimulate people to replace LED lamps and intervene in the market price of LED lamps to control them at 120-130 baht per lamp. At present, the number of LED lamps that have been certified by the National Energy Saving Efficiency No. 5 Standard is about 820,000. Coupled with the promotion of government departments, it is estimated that the popularity of LED lamps will further increase and achieve the effect of saving more electricity.
The National Power Supply Bureau's Electrical Appliance Energy Saving Standard No. 5 certification system has been implemented for 20 years, and has achieved a total saving of 3,000 million watts of electricity, which is equivalent to saving nearly 100 billion baht in investment in new power plants.
