+In addition, total global office lighting revenue is expected to reach US$1 billion in 2015, of which US$200 million is expected to be LED lighting. +LED lighting is increasing its market penetration, and although initial installation costs are generally higher, it reduces maintenance and energy costs. The other major technology is high-intensity discharge (HID).
+Key factors for manufacturing and shipping decisions regarding lighting fixtures are safety, quality of light, upfront costs, running costs, and ease of maintenance. LED lighting does a good job in most aspects, however, it is worth noting that its initial installation cost is higher than other technologies.
Among installed transportation lighting projects in 2014, service and maintenance accounted for 21% of project costs, equipment accounted for 58%, 17% for installation, and 4% for design and construction. According to IHS lighting and LED chief analyst Jamie Foxx, the transportation sector is increasingly using LED lighting, and smart lighting is also beginning to penetrate, especially urban LED street lighting. The reasons for moving to LED smart lighting are two-fold: first, there is the common need to dim or switch off depending on the time of day or ambient light levels; second, centralized control of multiple street and traffic lights is becoming more common. According to one road operator: "You can finally monitor every LED fixture and know how it is working and whether it is malfunctioning. Everything will be centralized."
