IHS Markit releases 2015 LED supplier rankings

According to the 2016 version of IHS Markit's "Packaged LED Report", Nichia led lighting and automotive applications in 2015, accounting for 12.9% of the overall packaged LED market. This is followed by Osram and Lumileds, with a combined market share of 14.7%.

IHS Markit LED and Lighting Senior Analyst Alice Tao said: "It is not unexpected that Nichia maintains the lead in many fields. In 2015, Nichia surpassed Cree, the lighting industry champion in 2014, to win the championship. Nichia is also very strong in the mobile phone LED industry, and it is the main supplier of Apple's iPhone."

Samsung is a leading supplier of backlights, including LEDs used in televisions, monitors, laptops and tablets. Followed by Nichia and LG Innotek.

Osram has been a leading supplier in the automotive LED industry for many years. In 2015, its market share in LED applications in the overall automotive market was 35%, and it accounted for 40% in the automotive exterior market. Moreover, it is also a leader in the industrial, medical, security, projection, signage and non-conventional application LED markets.
