Since 2000, my country's LED display application industry has grown steadily, and the overall scale has increased year by year. In 2014, benefiting from the development of small-pitch products and the advertising media market, the market sales scale of the national LED display application industry achieved substantial growth. The total market volume for the year reached about 30 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth rate of 10%. It can be said to be a prosperous situation.
As the scale of the industry steadily increases, product categories are greatly enriched, and market segments continue to expand. In order to ensure the healthy and orderly development of the LED display application industry, to guide production and application, provide testing and detection methods, standardize the market and promote trade, it is necessary for us to further establish and improve LED display industry standards.
Review of Industry Standards
China’s LED display industry has always attached great importance to the formulation of industry standards, and China’s LED display industry standards started early. In 1995, Beijing Lantong Electronics Co., Ltd., with the support of the "Ministry of Electronic Industry", the predecessor of today's "Ministry of Industry and Information Technology", began to draft the "General Specifications for LED Displays". In 1997, it became the first industry standard (de facto national standard) in the LED display industry. This is also the world’s earliest LED industry standard.
Subsequently, in 2003, another heavyweight standard in the industry, the "LED Display Test Method", was also born. In addition, the "Specifications for LED Display Screens for Sports Venues" were also promulgated and implemented in 2009.
Obviously, with the continuous expansion of the LED display market, technological progress, and the continuous improvement of people's living standards, which have brought higher requirements for the quality of life, existing industry standards cannot fully meet the needs of the LED display industry and engineering. The LED display standard working group held a standardization work meeting in 2010, conducted research and discussion on the LED display standard system, and initially formed an LED standard system framework. See Appendix 1 for details.
The LED display standard system is the first-level design of industry standards and the macro layout for the formulation of future industry standards, pointing out the direction for the formulation of a series of industry standards in the future. Of course, it does not rule out that with the in-depth development of the industry, some adjustments and changes will be made in time.
Current status of industry standards
"The current LED display industry standards are mainly divided into three parts - LED display general specifications (SJ/T 11141-2012), LED display test methods (SJ/T 11281-2007), and LED display specifications for sports venues (SJ/T 11406-2009)," Zhao Ying, a senior engineer at the China Electronics Technology Standardization Institute, told the "LED Screen World" reporter. See Appendix 2 for details.
Hong Zhen, deputy secretary-general of the LED Display Application Branch of China Optical Association and leader of the standards group, said: "The two major LED screen display industry standards - "General Specifications for LED Displays" (SJ/T 11141-2012) and "LED Display Test Methods" (SJ/T 11281-2007) have been revised many times and are becoming increasingly perfect. These two standards have become the written document of China's LED display industry. "Constitution"; has passed the test of major projects such as "Beijing Olympic Games, Shanghai World Expo..."; the bidding rate is very high. So far, almost all LED display bidding and bidding are based on these two standards; it has gained the consensus of the entire industry and overseas market applications, and has also been recognized by Taiwanese compatriots and peers from various countries. "
Industry Standard Outlook
Based on the LED standard system, a series of industry standards are under intensive preparation. Zhao Ying said that several standards to be released include the subjective evaluation method of LED display image quality (electronics industry standard), LED display interference light evaluation specification (national standard), and LED display interference light on-site measurement method (national standard).
Zhao Ying believes that the new standard - the evaluation requirements and methods for LED display interference light will regulate the correct and reasonable use of LED displays to avoid light interference caused by improper use. For example, in dark environments (after dark), the brightness of LED displays must be reduced; different types of LED displays should be installed in residential areas and commercial areas.
“The introduction of new standards will give LED screen manufacturers directional guidance in environmental protection and light pollution control, further standardize market order, and create a good development space for the industry,” Hong Zhen told the reporter of “LED Screen World”.
In addition, Hong Zhen also mentioned some institutional issues in the current industry standard formulation process. He said: "Currently, there are still many imperfections in the formulation process of China's LED industry standards. One of the more prominent problems is the long time cycle - it often takes about 2 years for a standard to be revised from revision to introduction. In many cases, the formulation of industry standards lags behind technological development, resulting in new standards becoming a dead letter and losing their meaning."
"In the future, we need to change the working mechanism and change the past by the National Standardization Committee. The committee promulgated standards, and industry associations were only responsible for instilling standards into the industry. Instead, the new working mechanism of the 'Alliance Standards', which the National Standardization Committee actively cooperated with, allowed the industry associations to play a main role. The implementation of the 'Alliance Standards' helps the new standards to respond quickly to market changes and regulate industry development in real time. This change in institutional mechanisms is also highly consistent with the "Deepening Standardization Reform Plan" issued by the State Council in March this year. ”
"The future working mechanism of the 'Alliance Standard' will be for the 'LED Display Application Branch of the China Optics and Optoelectronics Industry Association' to quickly introduce the 'LED Display Alliance Standard' with market hot spots and key actual needs, and apply it to the market to meet the market's demand for standards. At the same time, let practice test the quality of the 'standard'. When the time is right, it will be upgraded to a 'national standard' and an 'industry standard'," Hong Zhen pointed out.
Currently, the LED display industry standards are still being supplemented and improved. With the rapid development of my country's LED display application industry, it will inevitably accelerate the improvement of existing standards and the establishment of new standards in the industry; conversely, once effective standards are established and implemented, it will also greatly promote the stable and healthy development of my country's LED display industry. I believe that with the joint efforts of the Standardization Working Group of the LED Display Industry Association, the National Standardization Working Committee and colleagues in the industry, our standard formulation work will surely reach a new level and we will be able to complete the historic task of building an LED standard system as soon as possible.
