On October 15, Micro LED microdisplay technology manufacturer JBD officially released a new generation of Micro LED microdisplay technology flagship platform "Roadrunner" (Roadrunner), achieving a key breakthrough in 2.5 micron pixel pitch.
It is reported that since mass production in 2021, JBD's "Hummingbird" series with a pixel pitch of 4 microns has promoted the popularity of Micro LED microdisplays with its high brightness and extremely low power consumption.
Currently, the Hummingbird series has been widely used in nearly 50 AR smart glasses, including Rokid Glasses, Alibaba Quark Glasses, RayNeo X3 Pro, INMO GO2, MLVision M5 and Leion Hey2, etc., becoming the core technology foundation for consumer-grade AR displays.
The "Roadrunner" technology platform released this time is JBD's flagship solution for the next generation of consumer AR products. In the future, this technology will give priority to the shipment of multi-color light machines, giving full play to JBD’s advantages in Micro LEAdvantages in D panel assembly and testing, display algorithms, optical design, cost control, etc.
JBD said that through full-link innovation in chip process and device architecture, the "Roadrunner" platform has solved the problem of ultra-small size Micro LED luminous efficiency, further improving light efficiency, energy consumption ratio and image quality performance. The first product in this series, the "Roadrunner I" multi-color light engine module, will be built based on the mature mass production technology framework of the Hummingbird series.
In terms of performance, the pixel density of "Roadrunner" technology is as high as 10,160PPI, and the number of pixels per unit area is 2.56 times that of the Hummingbird series. For the first time, JBD uses a 22nm silicon backplane process to control power consumption within 18 milliwatts, significantly reducing the energy consumption of the entire machine.
Due to the finer pixel pitch, the "Roadrunner" light engine is more than 50% smaller than the Hummingbird generation while maintaining the same resolution, achieving a thinner and lighter modular design. At the same time, relying on JBD's technological accumulation in mass production, the products perform excellently in terms of consistency and stability.
Currently, JBD is cooperating with a number of international technology giants to promote the mass production of "Roadrunner" technology, which is expected to be gradually introduced to the market in the second half of 2026.
JBD stated that “Roadrunner”’s breakthroughs in pixel density and energy efficiency are the key to AR smart glasses.Bringing higher resolution, wider field of view and more comfortable visual experience, while taking into account ultra-small design, Micro LED surpasses LCoS and other technical solutions in terms of light engine volume, contrast and pixel density.
