Panasonic and SONY have withdrawn from the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) business
Japan's Panasonic Electric Co. said at the end of May that it had decided to withdraw from the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) field and planned to sell its OLED business to Japan Display Company. The two parties are expected to reach an agreement in June this year.
Panasonic plans to focus on LCD products produced at its factory in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, to increase the production proportion of LCD products and ensure the company's profitability. Founded in April 2012, Nippon Display is the world's largest producer of LCD panels for tablets and smartphones.
As early as the end of 2013, Panasonic and SONY ended their cooperation in OLED development. SONY also announced earlier this year that it would abandon its OLED business.
Data show that OLED is self-luminous, does not require a backlight, is thin, has a wide viewing angle, and is bendable. It is considered a new generation of flat display technology. In contrast, LCD displays require backlight and consume a lot of energy.
