Shanghai releases action plan for next-generation display industry, focusing on key technological breakthroughs such as Micro LED

The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology issued the "Action Plan for the High-Quality Development of Shanghai's Next-Generation Display Industry" on July 22, proposing to build a "1+2+3+4" industrial system, focusing on breakthroughs in key technologies such as Micro LED, silicon-based OLED, and flexible displays, with the goal of reaching the internationally advanced level of industrial competitiveness by 2030. The plan clearly will cultivate more than three leading domestic companies and promote innovation in terminal applications such as smart glasses and vehicle displays. In terms of technical research, the focus is on supporting the mass production of full-color Micro LED microdisplays and breakthroughs in key technologies such as massive pixel transfer; accelerating the research and development of silicon-based OLED microdisplays and solving industry pain points such as the screen door effect. Agency data shows that global sales of AI smart glasses increased 216% year-on-year to 600,000 units in the first quarter of 2025, and full-year sales are expected to reach 5.5 million units. CITIC Securities predicts that the global Mini LED backlight module market size will reach 15.6 billion yuan in 2028, and the direct display market size will reach 34.6 billion yuan. The growth elasticity of the equipment and system side is outstanding. The size of the crystal bonding machine market in 2028 is expected to be 1.7 billion yuan, and the scale of the display control system is 8.7 billion yuan.
