According to ITRI, this innovation will help panel manufacturers and other industry players upgrade their technology, expand their Micro LED applications, meet market demand and secure business opportunities for next-generation AR display products to enable immersive experiences in the Metaverse.
ITRI's high-resolution full-color Micro LED display for AR glasses has four main features: Ultra-high resolution of more than 2000 pixels per inch (PPI) is ideal for AR applications; Micro LED display can provideWith over 20,000 nits of brightness, it’s 10 times brighter than many smart glasses currently on the market. Therefore, the display is suitable for outdoor scenes and meets the brightness requirements of existing plug-in side projection AR light machines. ITRI also pointed out that the display has the potential to exceed the performance of existing corresponding displays, such as OLED-based designs; The display and sensor functions are integrated in a compact design of less than 0.5 inches, making the product slim in appearance and increasing compatibility with other devices; The power consumption is less than 1 W. Because it consumes less than half the energy of traditional smart glasses, the device can be worn for extended periods of time without charging.
ITRI said the design uses heterogeneous integration technology similar to semiconductor processes to create microdisplays with a wide color gamut by integrating Micro LED, CMOS and quantum dot color conversion layers into a single panel.
Dr. Zhang Shijie, general manager of ITRI's Electronics and Optoelectronic Systems Research Laboratory, said: "ITRIThe institute’s high-resolution full-color Micro LED display for AR glasses has high commercial value and can enhance user experience due to its high resolution, high brightness, device compatibility, compact size and low power consumption. This high-resolution Micro LED will help the world's leading display manufacturers take advantage of a wide range of emerging Micro LED applications. ITRI assists manufacturers with trial production and technology transfer, laying the foundation for the development of in-vehicle displays and next-generation XR glasses. ”
In order to introduce ITRI's Micro LED technology into AR applications and bring it from the laboratory to the market, ITRI established the Micro LED Alliance in 2016 to horizontally integrate the industry chain. The alliance connects approximately 50 industry chain suppliers of advanced materials, semiconductor processes, and precision equipment, and provides solutions that meet industry needs at different stages of verification, development, and IP licensing.
ITRI said its new high-resolution, full-color Micro LED displays for AR glasses are sold as system-oriented industry integration and manufacturing platform services and are now available globally.
