Yunnan's first science fiction short film using LED virtual shooting technology starts shooting

On March 25, Yunnan Province's first campus science fiction short film "Mission and Redemption" produced using full-process LED virtual shooting technology was launched at the virtual production experimental base of 871 Cultural and Creative Park, Panlong District, Kunming.

It is understood that the virtual production experimental base is the first school-enterprise collaborative virtual production experimental base in southwest China created by the School of Film and Television of Yunnan University of the Arts, Yunnan Xingyue Media, Canon (China) Co., Ltd., and Queyue Digital Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. in the 871 Cultural and Creative Park. The completion of the base not only provides a practical platform for the filming of the graduation work "Mission and Redemption" by Yunnan Art students, but also marks that film and television education in Yunnan colleges and universities has officially entered the "digital intelligence era."

Introducing LED virtual shooting technology into the teaching system for the first time

Hong Zhiming, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Film and Television of Yunnan University of the Arts, said that in order to cultivate innovative talents that can truly adapt to future industry development, colleges and universities must break through the limitations of traditional teaching models and integrate cutting-edge technology into teaching practice.

It is reported that LED virtual production technology has restructured the film and television industry processes on a global scale. From "The Mandalorian" to "Thor 4", the domestic film "The Sky King", many international blockbusters have used this technology to achieve breakthrough visual expressions.

"Mission and Redemption" was shot and produced by Yunyi students. The entire process was produced using LED virtual shooting technology. The themes it discussed covered profound issues such as war, environmental disasters and human hope. With the help of the VP-X3000 new LED surround screen system and Unreal Engine 5 real-time rendering technology, a fully digital process from pre-show to post-production is realized, greatly improving production efficiency and visual expression. School students use LED virtual production technology in creative projects, which is the first time in the field of film and television education in Yunnan universities.

"First timeIntroducing LED virtual shooting technology into the teaching system allows students to be exposed to the industry's most cutting-edge technologies and workflows on campus, and truly achieves a seamless connection with the industry. Our students have the opportunity to operate this system by themselves and achieve "what you see is what you get" science fiction scenes in front of the LED ring screen. This valuable practical experience is something that traditional classrooms can never provide. "Hong Zhiming believes that "Mission and Redemption" will be a useful attempt to showcase the achievements of film and television education in Yunnan universities.

At the opening ceremony, Hong Zhiming expressed his ardent hopes to the students participating in the film production: "You will personally experience the forefront of film and television technological changes and explore with your own hands the infinite possibilities of the integration of content creation and technology. I hope you will cherish this opportunity and not only learn technical operations, but also think about how technology can serve artistic expression and how to make technology a powerful tool for telling Chinese stories. ”

He also said that in the future, he will work with the three companies to jointly promote the innovative application of virtual production technology in cultural tourism promotion, intangible cultural heritage digitization and other fields, and plans to jointly hold the "Yunnan University Virtual Production Creation Competition" next year to contribute the "Yunyi Solution" to the digital transformation of film and television education in Southwest China. "This in-depth practice of industry-education integration can not only cultivate a group of digital talents with an international perspective.Imaging talents can also inject new technological momentum into Yunnan's cultural and creative industries, ultimately realizing the multi-dimensional value resonance of 'talent training - industrial upgrading - cultural output'. "Hong Zhiming said.

The first virtual digital studio in Southwest China promotes the upgrading of the regional film and television industry

It is understood that Xingyue Digital Laboratory is the first virtual digital studio in Southwest China introduced in Panlong District in 2024. Xingyue Media uses a film and television-grade LED display to construct a curved facade screen, which supports two shooting methods: virtual production (VP) and extended reality (XR), fully empowering content creation. Spectacular scenes thousands of miles away can be moved into the virtual studio, and "what is in the heart" can be made "visible to the naked eye", which greatly improves the efficiency of film and television. Production efficiency and flexibility, shortening the production cycle, and reducing production costs. This cooperation project not only provides equipment and technical support, but also involves the in-depth integration of resources and the innovation of talent training models. This new industry-education integration model enables seamless connection between educational resources and industry frontiers, which will benefit students from various universities every year, allowing them to master the entire process of skills from creative conception to actual shooting, and significantly enhance their employment competitiveness.

According to the project leader, this cooperation will be carried out at four levels: film and television technology innovation, talent training model innovation, regional cultural and creative ecological empowerment, and education digital transformation. It is expected to create more than 500 related jobs and provide a replicable and popular "cloud art model" for film and television education in the western region. As the project continues to advance, all parties plan to further deepen cooperation and explore the application of virtual production technology in more fields. This is a truly future-oriented school-enterprise cooperation that will cultivate a group of innovative film and television talents in Yunnan.

According to the relevant person in charge of Panlong District, the next step is to implement "government-enterprise linkage + industry-education integration" to jointly create "a kind of life called Yunnan" through film and television.
