Vehicle display covers display technologies such as liquid crystal, OLED and Micro LED. Peng Shuanglang revealed that currently AUO’s automotive display business is still focused on cost-effective LCD displays. Mini LED backlight technology will be incorporated to make the colors richer, and low-temperature polysilicon technology will be introduced to enable touch control. For automotive OLED displays, OLED screens will be outsourced to produce them.
The next step, AUO’s automotive business will focus on smart cockpits integrating Micro LED display technology. Peng Shuanglang revealed that the new energy vehicle jointly developed by Sony and Honda will be launched in the United States next year. The front display of the car uses AUO's Micro LED display, so Micro LED display will be applied in batches on the car next year.
Compared with liquid crystal and OLED, Micro LED display has the advantages of being thin, bendable, wide viewing angle, low energy consumption, splicable, long life, and high transparency, but it is expensive. Peng Shuanglang said, AUOBy expanding applications and optimizing components, the cost of Micro LED can be reduced by half every two years. It is expected that its cost will be close to that of OLED in 2029 and 2030. In the future, Micro LED can also be used in heads-up displays, central control displays, smart windows, sunroofs, smart driving interfaces, etc. in smart cars.
Mainland Chinese display panel companies are also actively expanding their automotive business. Peng Shuanglang believes that the value of smart cockpits is about ten times that of in-vehicle display panel modules. After AUO acquired BHTC, it has become a first-tier automotive supplier. Therefore, AUO’s in-vehicle business will shift from supplying panel modules to supplying smart seats.Transform cabin solutions to enhance value.
"There will also be a lot of potential demand for external displays of smart cars." Peng Shuanglang said that in the future, in the Internet of Vehicles, the front of the car can have a bumper display, the rear window can have advertising display, the rear of the car can also have information display, the side window display can be used to welcome guests, and the triangular window display can be used for customized functional interfaces. Micro in these areas LEDs also have a chance to play a role.
Yu Bin, research director of TrendForce, analyzed to China Business News that Micro LED, with its high brightness, design freedom, long life and other characteristics, will definitely become one of the important routes for automotive display technology in the future. We have already seen Micro LED manufacturers and OEMs working together to develop results, and some manufacturers estimate that they will be mass-produced in 2026.
