LG Display has confirmed the sale of its Guangzhou LCD factory to TCL CSOT

It is reported that LG Display has decided to sell its 8.5-generation Guangzhou LCD factory (including GP1 and GP2) to China Star Optoelectronics (CSOT), a subsidiary of China's TCL Group. This major move is expected to reshape the global display market.

It is understood that China Star Optoelectronics has proposed the most advanced acquisition conditions, with a total value of 2 trillion won (approximately 10.6 billion yuan), including the acquisition of a 10% stake in the Guangzhou factory of the Chinese television company Skyworth, and was confirmed as the final candidate.

As of this year, CSOT's production capacity market share is 19.7%. With the acquisition of LG Display's Guangzhou factory, its market share is expected to increase to 23.9% in 2026. Together with BOE's 27.0% market share, the two Chinese companies will account for 50.9% of the market share.

In turn, LG Display's LCD market share (6.2% in 2023) is expected to fall to 4.2% this year and 4.0% in 2025 due to the sale of the Guangzhou factory in 2024. By 2027, LG Display’s share is expected to shrink further to 1.8%. This is different from 2011The 55% market share occupied by Samsung Display and LG Display is in sharp contrast. It is worth noting that Samsung Display will completely withdraw from the LCD business in 2022.

After LG Display sold its Guangzhou LCD factory, it also marked that Korean companies will completely withdraw from the supply of LCD TV panels.

These shifts in the Asian panel industry are expected to impact the manufacturing roadmap of TV manufacturers. Japan's Sharp also plans to stop production at its LCD TV panel factory in Sakai City by September, which will further change the competitive landscape.

David Hsieh, senior research director of global market research company Omdia, delivered a speech on "Display Market Outlook 2024-2025" at the "2024 Display Business Forum" on August 13 and made the above prediction. "Samsung VD (Visual Display) has signed long-term agreements with CSOT, AU Optronics, Innolux, LG Display, Sharp Sakai SIO, etc.," Hsieh said, adding, "After LG Display sells its Guangzhou LCD factory, CSOT will become its most important supplier. ”

With Sharp Sakai City TVWith the closure of board factories, it is expected that complete machine manufacturers will adjust their configurations for BOE (60-inch, 70-inch), Huike (70-inch) and Innolux (42-inch). David Hsieh also pointed out that Chinese companies are rapidly expanding their dominance not only in the LCD field, but also in the OLED panel field.

Smartphone OLED panel shipments are expected to increase from 622 million pieces last year to 800 million pieces this year. During this period, Korean companies such as Samsung Display and LG Display are expected to account for 379 million and 60 million pieces of shipments respectively, accounting for 55%. The remaining 45% will be occupied by Chinese companies such as BOE and CSOT, which will increase the share of Chinese companies by 6 percentage points within a year.

Chinese companies are also rapidly rising to increase their share of the OLED market for foldable screen smartphones. In 2022, Samsung's share of folding screen smartphone OLED will be 84%, while BOE's will be 16%. By 2023, manufacturers' market share is expected to be 68% for Samsung, 22% for BOE, 6% for China Star Optoelectronics, and 4% for Visionox. This trend is expected to expand further this year, with Samsung accounting for 59%, BOE accounting for 27%, China Star Optoelectronics accounting for 7%, and Visionox accounting for 7%.

"Folding screen manufacturers are releasing new models every year, and Chinese folding screen OLED manufacturers are increasing market share through diversified designs." David Hsieh commented, "Samsung Display is leading innovation by introducing new technologies to minimize folding creases."
