Mini LED car screens are becoming more popular, BOE is leading the new car display track
In the increasingly fierce competition in the new energy vehicle market, smart cockpits have become a key part of improving the smart experience. As an important part of the smart cockpit, vehicle screens are rapidly developing in the direction of large screens, multi-screens and joint screens. As the "involution" phenomenon continues to intensify, Mini LED car screens have become a new trend in the development of future car screens with their unique advantages.
From traditional LCD displays to advanced OLED display technology, various screen designs have their own characteristics and limitations in the automotive field. In contrast, although Micro LED panel display technology has broad prospects, due to its high technical difficulty, no mass-produced models equipped with this technology have yet been released. Although OLED technology has been cultivated for many years, it has not completely solved the problem of screen burn-in, and there are deficiencies in light source brightness, service life, etc., which limits its further development in the automotive field. Against this background, Mini LED backlight technology, as an upgraded version of LCD backlight, combines the advantages of OLED and LCD. It stands out for its long life and no screen burn-in. As Mini LED chip technology becomes increasingly mature, it is gradually being introduced into the automotive display field.
Since Mini LED technology entered commercial use in 2021, it has developed rapidly and has entered a stage of rapid growth. According to incomplete statistics, in the current domestic market, many companies including BOE, Shenzhen Tianma, TCL Huaxing, etc. have plans in the field of automotive Mini LED backlight technology. Among them, BOE, as an industry leader, recently released a new 44-inch Mini LED car display with a backlight partition count of up to 6,000+. It performs well in display performance, with a brightness of 2,000 nits, a contrast ratio of up to 1 million:1, a resolution of 9K, and a refresh rate of 90Hz. At the same time, the display also adopts an R4200mm curvature radius design, which brings an immersive visual effect to drivers and passengers.
BOE is actively expanding its business in the automotive display field through its subsidiary BOE Precision Electronics Co., Ltd. As a group in the carAs the main sales platform in the automotive market, BOE Precision occupies a leading position in the automotive TFT display and large and medium-sized display module markets. Relying on its technological advantages in the industry, BOE Precision has launched a variety of cutting-edge automotive display products including Mini LED and AMOLED, bringing more choices to the market.
Not only that, BOE also supplies a variety of displays for the new Jikrypton 001 model, including a 15.05-inch floating touch center control screen, a 13.02-inch half-moon instrument screen and a 6-inch rear multi-function touch screen. Among them, the 15.05-inch central control screen uses BOE flexible OLED technology with a resolution of up to 2.5K, supports multi-touch, and is equipped with low blue light and low-flash eye protection technology to provide drivers and passengers with a more comfortable and safer visual experience.
At the CES 2024 exhibition at the beginning of the year, BOE Precision Electronics brought cutting-edge products such as Oxide, 8K, BD Cell, Mini LED, and OLED.Display technology was unveiled, showcasing a variety of vehicle display products and solutions. Among them, the world's premiere of BOE's super-large Oxide smart cockpit and the Geely Galaxy E8 car equipped with a 45-inch 8K through-car screen became the highlights of the exhibition. The launch of these innovative products not only demonstrates BOE’s strong strength in the field of vehicle-mounted display, but also points the way for the future development of vehicle-mounted display technology.
In recent years, BOE has continued to expand its production capacity layout in the field of automotive displays. Especially in 2022, the Chengdu BOE vehicle display base jointly invested by BOE Precision and its parent company BOE Technology Group has officially started production. The total investment in the base is as high as 2.5 billion yuan, and it is expected that the annual production of vehicle-mounted displays will reach 15 million pieces after reaching full production. This move will further enhance BOE’s market competitiveness in the field of automotive displays.
In terms of performance, as BOE Precision's automotive display business revenue share increases year by year, its performance also shows a trend of rapid growth. In the first half of 2023, BOE's revenue reached HK$5.21 billion, a year-on-year increase of 8%, and the profit attributable to shareholders was HK$203 million. In addition, BOE Huacan Optoelectronics, an LED chip company controlled by BOE, is also actively promoting LED automotive production.product development. Its automotive chip solutions have been widely used in multiple application scenarios such as headlights, taillights, vehicle displays, ambient lights, and indicator lights.
Currently, many panel manufacturers are increasing their efforts in Mini LED automotive display technology. This trend will promote the popularization of Mini LED technology in the field of automotive display and help Mini LED truly open up the automotive display market with huge room for growth, thus contributing more performance to enterprises.
