In his speech, Deputy Director Chen Bin of the Fuzhou New District Administrative Committee expressed his warm welcome and gratitude to the leaders, experts, scholars and entrepreneurs who participated in the 7th China (International) Micro LED Display Summit Forum in 2024. In his keynote speech, Ouyang Zhongcan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Strategic Development Committee of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, emphasized the core position of new display technology in China's digital economy and mentioned the key role of scientific and technological innovation in promoting industrial innovation. He pointed out that new display technology, alongside integrated circuits, is one of the key areas of national development. Academician Ouyang reviewed the development history of China's display industry, from relying on imports to becoming a global leader. He also emphasized the importance of the government-industry-university-research model in the development of the new display industry, and looked forward to the future potential of Micro LED and other technologies. Finally, he called on national and local governments to continue to support the development of new display technologies to maintain China's leading position in the global display industry.

Zheng Youyi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of Nanjing University, expressed warm congratulations on the convening of the 7th China (International) Micro LED Display Summit Forum in 2024 in an online speech. He emphasized the application potential of Micro LED as a new generation of display technology in multiple fields, especially in ultra-large commercial displays and micro-display applications in the fields of AR and VR. In his speech, Liu Bin, deputy dean and professor of the School of Electronics of Nanjing University, conveyed several suggestions from Academician Zheng on the development of Micro LED display technology.discussion. First of all, we must seize the opportunity, adapt to the development of the times, and accelerate the development of the Micro LED display industry, especially in the context of the development of high-bandwidth, low-latency 6G networks and artificial intelligence technology. Secondly, it is necessary to give full play to the excellent display performance of Micro LED, such as high brightness, high transparency, and its application potential in transparent display and AR/VR fields. Third, the combination of Micro LED display technology and artificial intelligence technology will promote intelligent display and open up new application scenarios. Professor Liu Bin also briefly introduced the research progress of their laboratory on GaN-based Micro LED full-color chips and driver integration technology, including improving the efficiency of small-size Micro LED devices, realizing high-transparency monochromatic transparent module screens, and realizing full-color display through quantum dot color conversion technology.

Guo Haicheng, an academician of the National Academy of Inventors and an academician of the Hong Kong Academy of Science and Engineering, mentioned the application of UVC LED in lithography technology. UVC LED can achieve high power and high definition matrix, which is particularly important for grinding plate-free lithography technology. The 3-micron UVC LED they developed performs well, not only with high power but also high efficiency. This is not common in small-size LEDs. Usually, the smaller the size, the lower the power and efficiency. Guo Haicheng explained that this is because small-size LEDs have better Crensbeding (which may refer to quantum efficiency) and therefore can achieve high power output. Their team also explored incorporating UVC LED is used to excite quantum dots to achieve color display. This approach not only improves color purity but also enhances color saturation, which is critical to improving the performance of display technology.

Guo Tailiang, a foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, a professor at Fuzhou University, and deputy director of the Mindu Innovation Laboratory, introduced the progress of Fuzhou University’s Mindu Laboratory in micro-nano display technology. He emphasized the arrival of the micro-nano display era, especially the trend of pixel sizes entering the nanometer level. The laboratory has made significant progress in the field of Micro LED, including mass transfer technology, laser lift-off, laser transfer and stamp transfer technology, as well as self-developed transfer materials. They also developed low-temperature bonding technology and QD transfer technology, and explored DBR and light extraction technology. Guo Tailiang mentioned the laboratory's achievements in high-PPI light-emitting devices and contactless detection technology, as well as the application potential of quantum dot materials in micro-displays. Chen Ming, director of the glass-based LED business center of BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd., pointed out in his speech that although Micro LED costs are higher, its cost competitiveness will improve as technology advances. Chen Ming analyzed the application potential of Micro LED in splicing large screens, high-end TVs, transparent applications and automotive scenarios, and discussedIt discusses the external challenges it faces, such as competition with OLED, as well as internal challenges, especially mass transfer technology and repair methods. He proposed that Micro LED costs can be reduced by developing three-color integrated CUC technology, laser welding technology and improving the repair success rate. Chen Ming also looked forward to the market opportunities of Micro LED, believing that it has broad prospects in the fields of medium and large-sized displays, automotive and other fields.

Lin Yujie, deputy general manager of AU Optronics Co., Ltd., shared AU Optronics’ development history and future prospects in the field of Micro LED display technology. She emphasized the advantages of Micro LED in terms of brightness, transparency, viewing angle and seamless splicing, as well as its high brightness performance in various environments. AU Optronics holds more than 1,000 patents in Micro LED technology and showcased a number of innovative products at the SID exhibition, including the world's first Fresball Micro LED display and transparent display. Lin Yujie mentioned that AU Optronics is committed to commercializing Micro LED technology, launching a variety of products in cooperation with customers, and has made progress in improving production efficiency and reducing costs. She called on the industry to cooperate and jointly promote the industrialization of Micro LED display technology to achieve wider applications and benefit mankind.

In his speech, Pan Anlian, Vice President of Hunan Normal University, shared Hunan Normal University’s achievements in the field of silicon-based vertically stacked Micro LED micro-display chips.Research progress. He emphasized the importance of Micro LED in the next generation of Internet terminals, especially its application potential in AR micro-display chips. They chose to grow gallium nitride on silicon to improve material utilization and integration process compatibility. The research team developed its own Micro MOCVD equipment, achieved large-area epitaxial growth, and made breakthroughs in improving the performance of micro-display chips, especially in the luminous efficiency and uniformity of red, green, and blue light. In addition, they also used non-aligned bonding technology and three-dimensional stacking process to achieve high PPI integrated display. Professor Pan demonstrated the application cooperation with partners in the fields of smart car lights, AI glasses and other fields, and expressed optimism about the future industrialization prospects.

Qin Feng, general manager of the R&D Center of Tianma Microelectronics Co., Ltd. and director of the Micro LED Research Institute, outlined the development trends of Micro LED display technology and the layout of Tianma Microelectronics in his speech. He pointed out that Micro LED technology has entered the incubation period and is expected to gradually mature and achieve an industry explosion by 2030. Tianma Microelectronics has formulated a 5+4+4 technology strategy in the Micro LED field, including solder joint manufacturing technology, three-dimensional wiring technology, backplane technology and display technology to support high-density splicing and automotive applications. Qin Feng mentioned that Tianma has established the Micro LED Alliance to promote the formulation of industry standards and specifications, and to jointly promote Micro LED with the industry through an open and cooperative attitude.Development of ED technology.

In his speech, Li Yunli, chairman of Nitron Technology, reviewed the development history of Micro LED technology from its initial exploration to the current mass production stage. Huang Xiuqi, general manager of Chengdu Chenxian Optoelectronics Co., Ltd., shared the development status and mass production challenges of Micro LED technology in his speech. He predicted that Micro LED will gradually enter a mature stage and achieve an industry explosion in the next few years, and emphasized the potential of Micro LED in different application scenarios, especially in the fields of large-size displays, consumer electronics and micro-displays. He mentioned that mainland China needs industrial chain innovation in the Micro LED era, not just technological innovation. Huang Xiuqi also discussed the performance and functional advantages of Micro LED, as well as the mass production processChallenges that need to be overcome include LED uniformity, mass transfer yield and splicing issues. He emphasized the importance of open cooperation, iterative development and industry chain collaboration, and looked forward to the future development direction of Micro LED technology.

In his speech, Professor Wang Lai of Tsinghua University discussed the application of Micro LED technology in the field of communications, especially the potential for high-speed interconnection between chips. He pointed out that as the demand for computing power from artificial intelligence increases, traditional electrical interconnection technology can no longer meet the demand. Optical interconnection technology, especially Micro LED-based interconnection solutions, shows great potential due to its high bandwidth density, low cost and high temperature resistance. Wang Lai mentioned that Micro LED arrays can achieve transmission rates of up to 4T bits per second, far exceeding traditional solutions. Wang Lai believes that Micro LED array transmission technology is expected to become an effective solution to solve interconnection problems between chips, and is optimistic about future technology development and application prospects.

Liu Zhaojun, Chairman of Shenzhen Sitan Technology Co., Ltd., shared in his speech the application progress of Micro LED technology in the field of micro-display, especially the commercialization process in AR, XR and vehicle-mounted displays. He pointed out that Micro LED technology has overcome most technical bottlenecks and currently still faces cost and yield challenges on the large screen side. However, it has gradually achieved commercialization on the micro display side and the market is growing rapidly. Liu Zhaojun emphasized the advantages of Micro LED in terms of power consumption and brightness.surface competitiveness, and mentioned technical challenges including high-precision bonding, size effects and full-color display. He predicted the cost downward trend of Micro LED microdisplays and mentioned the support of national policies for the Micro LED industry. Liu Zhaojun also introduced the team background of Stan Technology, the transformation from product lines and pilot lines to mass production, as well as the company's progress in AR, XR and vehicle-mounted display product platforms.

Chen Lixuan, Dean of the Central Research Institute of Shenzhen Unilumin Technology Co., Ltd., shared Unilumin Technology’s progress in the fields of Micro LED and Mini LED in his speech, especially emphasizing the potential of Micro LED technology in different application scenarios. Chen Lixuan discussed the advantages of Micro LED in reducing costs and improving performance, especially in the application of MIP (Micro LED integrated packaging) technology. Unilumin Technology has brought MIP technology to the market and plans to cooperate with panel manufacturers to promote the commercialization of Micro LED on Glass. He also mentioned Unilumin Technology’s efforts in improving LED picture quality, upgrading control systems and developing interactive functions, as well as exploring the possibilities of future LED applications, such as interactive solutions for dome environments.

Cao Shinan, a Ph.D. from the School of Electronics and Information Engineering of Tianjin University of Technology, introduced the Micro LED transfer system based on micro manipulators, especially the design of the magnetic levitation platform, on behalf of Dean Niu Pingjuan. He pointed out that Mini/Micro As a new generation of display technology, LED’s massive transfer during its preparation process is the main technical bottleneck for commercial application. Dr. Cao discussed existing methods of mass transfer in detail and proposed the magnetic levitation platform as a solution, emphasizing its advantages of no friction, high precision, low loss and long life. He mentioned that magnetic levitation platforms can be divided into small and large ones, and have been studied at home and abroad. However, there are problems such as high power consumption, uneven magnetic density and controller design. Dr. Cao's team designed a new type of magnetic levitation platform, the SHN6 degree-of-freedom magnetic levitation platform prototype, and conducted performance tests, demonstrating its excellent performance in terms of stability, load-bearing capacity and acceleration.

Hou Wei, Director of the Sales Department of Toray Advanced Engineering Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., introduced the background of Toray Engineering Co., Ltd. and its technological progress in the field of Micro LED in his speech. He emphasized that Micro LED technology is a combination of semiconductor and display technology, and Toray Engineering has the corresponding equipment and technology foundation in this field. Minister Hou gave an overview of Micro LED’s development history, market applications, and the company’s research and development work on Micro LED below 50 microns. Minister Hou also introduced several Micro LED transfer technology roadmaps, including STEM technology and SFOT LEZER transfer methods. Toray Engineering mainly adopts these two technology routes. Finally, he mentioned that Toray Engineering has entered into a strategic partnership with Art one Testo Company to improve production efficiencyand achieve data sharing.

Huang Qihao, marketing director of Jingcai Technology Co., Ltd., introduced the application of AI AOI (artificial intelligence automatic optical inspection) technology in the Micro LED industry in his speech. He emphasized the importance of AI AOI in improving detection accuracy and classification rate, especially when facing defect detection with irregularities and complex backgrounds. Huang Qihao mentioned that initial training through generative AI can save engineers time and improve the accuracy of the model. He demonstrated the application of AI AOI in the Micro LED front-end process, including metrological inspection and side line inspection at the VEFER end. In addition, AI AOI technology is also used in Micro OLED and high-end packaging fields. Huang Qihao concluded that AI AOI technology not only improves the accuracy of detection rate and classification rate, but also its application scope is constantly expanding. Jingcai Technology Co., Ltd. will continue to focus on sub-micron defect inspection and the development of innovative solutions.

Omdia senior analyst Shao Jian shared Omdia’s analysis of Micro LED display technology and market development trends. He mentioned that Micro LED technology has potential in multiple application fields, especially in the fields of AR and VR. It is expected that these markets will develop rapidly and the verification speed will be much faster than that of automotive applications. Shao Jian also mentioned that from a shipment perspective, the overall shipment volume of Micro LED will be close to 35% by 2031.billion, most of which will be dominated by AR and VR. For large displays and TV displays, overall shipments will be relatively small. In addition, smart watches, as another application scenario of Micro LED technology, may account for less than 1% of the entire display field shipments by 2031, despite their small size (10s of microns).
