ams-OSRAM launches new blue-green laser diode with five times the output power to improve DNA sequencing efficiency and accuracy

May 13, 2025 - AMS Osram (SIX: AMS), a global leader in smart sensors and transmitters, announced the expansion of its high-power laser component product line. The newly launched blue-green laser diode is specially designed for the life science field. It has a 488nm wavelength laser output and is up to five times brighter than the previous generation product. It is a significant breakthrough in terms of performance and energy efficiency. This performance upgrade is crucial for life science research and diagnostic applications such as DNA sequencing and flow cytometry, helping to achieve faster and more accurate detection and greatly expanding the diagnostic capabilities of large laboratories. This advancement in semiconductor laser technology will also help medical institutions, hospitals and nursing units create more compact and cost-effective diagnostic systems.

The PLT5 488HB_EP blue-green laser diode released this time can reach an output power of 300mW. Its optical performance is five times higher than the previous generation product, and the electro-optical conversion efficiency is increased by more than 40%. Such a significant increase in light output power not only helps improve measurement accuracy, but also speeds up the biological sample processing process. 488nm wavelength laser has become a key component in modern diagnosis and scientific research fields, and is widely used in blood, serum and plasma analysis, as well as flow cytometry and DNA sequencing and other scenarios. In genetic diagnostic applications, this laser technology achieves highly accurate sequence analysis by penetrating samples and utilizing the specific light absorption and emission properties of nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA.

Fluorescent dyes in the blue-green light band that are often used in flow cytometers and blood testing equipment have efficient excitation effects. This laser diode is specially designed for ±2nm wavelength stability and 300mW high light intensity output, perfectly meeting the stringent requirements for color reproducibility and precision measurement in life sciences. Its high-profile variable bandwidth feature also enables detailed control of light intensity, improving signal quality while speeding up the efficiency of the analysis process.

In addition, the new laser diode has a low thermal resistance design and can operate stably even in high-temperature operating environments. The built-in photodiode can monitor the output power in real time, and the ESD protection design comprehensively enhances the durability and reliability of the component.

In addition to life science applications, this blue-green laser diode also shows great potential in other diverse fields. For example, expanding the color gamut of stage and venue lighting can create dynamic light effects with visual impact; in fluorescence microscopy technology, the specific wavelength of 488nm helps improve image contrast and break through the limitations of traditional light sources in microstructure imaging.
