According to news on February 10, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reported that Apple has canceled an AR glasses project that can be used with Mac, but is still actively promoting the research and development of independent AR glasses, but it may need more time to perfect.
Gurman previously revealed that Apple originally planned to launch a product that looks like ordinary glasses, has a built-in display, and needs to be connected to a Mac. However, the project was recently terminated.
Although this news may seem disappointing, it is actually not. Only the Mac-connected AR glasses project has been cancelled.
According to Gurman, Apple hardware chief John Ternus didn’t want the product to fail again, so the company decided to be cautious about the development of independent AR glasses. Apple's standalone AR glasses will be closer to the $10,000 prototype Meta showed off last year. Apple is still developing standalone AR glasses, but it just needs more time.
Sources said that Apple’s Vision Products Group is still developing key underlying technologies for the product, such as screens and chips. Ternus, the new head of Vision Products Group, does not want the product to fail, so he will proceed cautiously.
Although Apple’s independent AR glasses research and development is still in progress, it is still at least 3-5 years away from the market. Vision OS has laid the foundation for AR glasses, and I hope Apple can bring truly interesting products.
